About Me
I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Chemical Biology of the National Hellenic Research Foundation. Although I completed my Undergraduate Studies in Pharmacy at the University of Patras, I chose to pursue a PhD in Physics (University of Exeter), specializing in Biophysics.
For the past decade, my research has focused on the interaction between electromagnetic radiation and matter (spectroscopy) and its applications in biomedicine. I have worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Imperial College London and the University of British Columbia, applying spectroscopic techniques to cancer‑tissue diagnostics and quality control of transfused blood.
In early 2020, I returned to Greece with an IKY fellowship to study skin cancer using Raman spectroscopy. I am now based at the Institute of Chemical Biology (NHRF), where my research focuses on the use of conjugated polymers for bioimaging and cancer‑cell therapy.
Why I Chose My Career
A sense of contribution and the interdisciplinary nature of research were the main reasons behind my career choice. As a student, I enjoyed subjects that were completely different from one another and always struggled to choose just one field.
I believe in the value of broad knowledge and in the way scientific disciplines complement each other. The combination of different scientific areas often leads to the joy of discovery and reveals how harmoniously and beautifully the world around us is built.
Why I Became a Volunteer at R.E.A.L Science
R.E.A.L Science is an essential initiative that connects schools with the world of research — something that was entirely missing in Greece. The concept of “researcher” is still unclear to many people, and this needs to change, starting with the younger generation.
Bringing a more interactive side of science into secondary education can strengthen students’ critical thinking and improve career orientation. I discovered the initiative through the “Real Skills for Scientists” webinars organized by EKT, and I am delighted to participate as a volunteer.
