A few words About Me
My name is Izabella Kentrou, and I am a resident physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology in San Diego, California. I was born and raised in Athens, and I moved to the United States with my family after my first year of high school. I completed high school in a small town in Massachusetts and later graduated from Cornell University in New York with a degree in Biology and Sociology. In 2020, I finished medical school at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and began my residency at UC San Diego Health, where I continue to train today.
Why I Chose My Career
My work allows me to use both my physical and intellectual abilities, and it places me at the center of some of the most beautiful—and most challenging—moments in the lives of the women I care for. As a field, Obstetrics and Gynecology combines surgery, general medicine, emergency care, obstetrics, and psychology—a unique blend not found in any other medical specialty.
Why I Became a Volunteer at R.E.A.L Science
My path to becoming a doctor was far from easy. As an immigrant in the U.S. at a critical age, I had to teach myself how the American educational system works in a very short time, while also facing discrimination from school counselors who saw only the surface and not my potential. Fortunately, I also met people who believed in me and offered the guidance I needed to succeed.
Recognizing how crucial that kind of support is, I want to offer it to others—especially to students who may be standing where I once stood.
