Hello! I’m Ioanna, and I’m currently pursuing my PhD in Dental Science at King’s College London and the Rosalind Franklin Institute.
My research focuses on developing “smart” biomaterials that help the body heal and regenerate tissues — a bit like giving cells their own superpower!
I love combining microscopy, materials science, and computational modelling to understand how the human body works at the microscopic level. When I’m not in the lab, you’ll probably find me traveling to new places, experimenting with new recipes, or dancing — from traditional Greek dances to latin and ballroom!
For me, science is adventure, creativity, and collaboration — and I want to inspire others to discover it with the same excitement!
Why I Chose My Career
Since I was young, I loved watching scientists in TV shows and movies working in forensic labs. I was fascinated by how they could “unravel” a mystery through knowledge, observation, and teamwork. That’s how I fell in love with science — because it blends curiosity, creativity, and the joy of solving problems.
Over the years, that curiosity led me to biomedical research and the study of biomaterials, where I continue to explore how science can help real people. I believe that when people find an environment that matches their values and skills, they can truly thrive. Through my work, I have the opportunity to support that connection, contributing both to personal growth and to the success of the organizations they join.
Why I Became a Volunteer at R.E.A.L Science
I wanted to join the platform to inspire others — just as my mentors inspired me. I love sharing the joy of science, answering questions, and showing how research can be creative, collaborative, and full of inspiration!
