A few words About Me
I am a biochemist–biotechnologist with a research interest in structural biology. I completed my studies (BSc and MSc) at the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of the University of Thessaly, where I also earned my PhD in 2020 in the field of structure‑based drug design. This approach involves extracting information from the three‑dimensional structures of macromolecules, such as enzymes, to identify chemical compounds—potential drugs—that selectively target these macromolecules.
I believe that communicating science to both children and adults is essential, not only to keep the public informed about the latest developments but also to help people evaluate the quality of scientific news. False information spreads rapidly and can sometimes put lives at risk, making science communication more important than ever.
Why I Chose My Career
In high school, biotechnology first sparked my interest, which led me to choose the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology for my Undergraduate Studies. Later, while working on my thesis and with the guidance of my supervisor, I began exploring structural biology. Today, I am even more fascinated by how the components of a cell regulate one another to create life. What once felt intimidating about science has now transformed into genuine enthusiasm.
Additionally, the interactions within an academic environment—working alongside colleagues from different scientific backgrounds—allow me to encounter new ideas and knowledge that I might never have discovered if I worked solely within my own field.
Why I Became a Volunteer at R.E.A.L Science
The limited career guidance I received in school nearly pushed me away from the path I ultimately chose. For this reason, I want to help future researchers make the best possible decisions for themselves. I hope to explain, as clearly as I can, how research works and to answer any questions they may have about their concerns or aspirations.
